EDLD 5366 Week 2 - Creating a Personal Logo

In this week's assignment we created a personal logo and collaborated on our group website project. We began to determine assignments for our project and looking for resources for each page. Nikki Looper began creating the site and setting up our pages and we decided on a logo! Nikki also established the Google doc that identifies our members, our assignment for the web site and our group plan on the completion of the group's site. Hannah Maness and I began adding our information to the site and will continue to research our designated pages to add additional info. This has been a great week! Nikki Looper and Hannah Maness rock!!

We also discussed "Personal Branding"
With the increasing popularity of social networking, students might be branding themselves without even knowing it. Just by using the same username on different websites you can start a brand. Please respond to the following questions on the weekly discussion board:

  1. When do/should we start teaching students about self-branding?

I would say as soon as possible. I can’t say a specific age or grade but when a student begins creating who they desire to be or seen as in the world of technology; via Facebook, Skype, twitter, blogs, personal websites, etc. they should be aware of what self-branding really is.

  1. What concepts about branding are important to teach?

It’s important to teach students that in branding themselves that they not only look at the surface but really take caution from within. They have to understand the importance of it. How it will give them a feel of belonging, and in belonging to a group or organization it is important to know how to conduct oneself. From the usernames they choose to the email address, avatars and any other images used to represent themselves.

  1. What strategies would you use to teach students about the concept of branding?

I would show videos on branding and perhaps a PowerPoint presentation on some examples of successful and unsuccessful situations of branding. Also not only discussing branding through technological features, but also how we tend to put our own brand on people because of how they dress, look or act.

  1. How can branding be used in an educational environment?

Schools can create the brand for the students. They can incorporate the students’ first name and other alphanumeric information for the school to be able to identify exactly who the student is; while still giving the student ownership by using their first name. It is also important that students understand and realize that branding is not only through technology but in everyday life. How we act, speak, conduct ourselves, dress; all of these attributes brand us and make us who we are and how people perceive us.
